I know that the last thing a person wants to think about after he or she has been injured on the job is what you are going to do from here? But, I have a word of advice for you that you should really think about is "Hire an Attorney!" I learned this the hard way. I have a friend of mine that is going through the same thing that I went through also which I will tell you a little about if you continue to read.
I hurt my back on the job in August 2003 and it was complete misery that I dealt with because of the care that worker's compensation was putting me through. First, what happened was I completely tore my disc at the level of L-5 thru S-1 and worker's compensation sent me to one of their doctors that happened to be in Las Vegas, which was closest to my home because I lived in Kingman, AZ. This doctor was just the beginning of a horrific time that I had. The first time that I met with him I went with my mother cause I could not drive myself and he actually had the nerve to kiss me. I thought maybe it was a fluke so I continued to see him and he actually operated on my back and he only went in through the front which was a mistake. I ended up falling all of the time. I quit seeing him after I went back for a follow up visit and I told him that I was falling and feeling horrible and he asked to see my scar in my back. I know that he read my file before he entered the room and was completely aware that he only did an anterior surgery. When I unbuttoned my pants and turned around he had the nerve to pull down my pants and look anyway. What nerve of this doctor.
I called my case manager from worker's compensation and told them that I will never go back and see him in my life. The way that I put it was "would you send your wife to someone like that?" And get this...it took them over 6 months to agree to let me see another doctor because of the fact that I had already been operated on by another doctor so no doctor's wanted to take me. Finally, they agreed to let me see a wonderful doctor in Phoenix, AZ. This doctor kept telling them that I needed another back surgery because the one that the doctor in Las Vegas gave me failed. Worker's compensation agreed after 2 years and then they tried to cancel at the last minute. Thank God I had a wonderful doctor who told me that I needed to come in anyway. Even their doctors said that I needed this surgery. The point of all of this is now I am disabled because of the constant delay's and I am in constant pain. It is best to get an attorney that you can trust right away so that you are not going through this on your own. Worker's compensation's policy is going to deny you always even if you are in desperate need of the surgery. Please get an attorney.

Online College or in class College
Ever think about going to college? It is a big decision that one needs to make and in order to make the proper decision one needs to consider a few things. One is it better to attend a community college first before transferring to an University after having earned enough credits. Or is it better for a person to just skip all of that all together and attend an online University. Well, I have to tell you I have done both the community college and the online university and I will tell you a little bit about what I know.
First if you are going to a community college you are going to have to worry about scheduling. Usually those college's are going to cater to the folks that work so most of the classes are going to be at night. Not always of course. But you are going to have to worry about your schedule if you have a job besides school. That can be a problem with scheduling. Some employers are not too happy about working with the person that has to go to school and is unable to attend the schedule that is already made up in advance. Nowadays there are many people that are desperate for jobs and I am sure that someone would love to have the job. Not only that there is the fact that you are going to have to sit in a class room for at least 2-3 hours at a time. I was even in one class that lasted 5 hours if you can believe that. If you have any back problems you are going to have to worry about that situation.
Online college is very convenient for the person that is working and has other activities besides just going to college. I personally attend the University of Phoenix and how it works there is you only take one class at a time and you are considered full time. It is great you can focus on your work at hand and get all of the work for the class done without distractions. Not only that you can have a life besides school. If is really something to consider if you are going to be going to college. But, make sure that the college you are considering is accredited this is very important.

What's it llike living with a TBI
Hello again from Kingman, Arizona! tonight I will be talking about what it is like to live with a Traumatic Brain Injury. My daughter who is 14 years old now survived a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at the age of 2 when we hit by a semi truck on the freeway coming back from Vancouver, Washington on May 28, 1996, which just happened to be Memorial Day. What a Memorial Day to remember don't you think?
Severe TB I's will leave someone in a coma usually. That is what happened to her it left her in a coma for 4 days. She had to learn everything over again right down to learning how to swallow. That just goes to show the severity of the brain injury. How brain injury works is it is much better (if there is a better brain injury) for an older person to sustain a brain injury because of the fact that a person that has more age has learned more. A younger person has not learned very much in their life time and to disrupt the neuron's and blood flow to the brain can be very detrimental leaving the child with life long cognitive deficits. This is what has happened to my daughter she has life long cognitive deficits. If you don't know what cognitive means it means thinking.
So what are the challenges that a person is going to deal with later as the time passes? This is what we deal with at my house with my daughter. There are times when things are going great. I should say that is when she gets her own way and we don't ask her to do anything. She has quite a few challenges. It is very challenging for her to clean her room for example because it is very overwhelming to her because there are things all over the place and she just doesn't know where to begin so there is a plan that we use that is better...We have marked all of her drawers with names of the clothing that goes in those drawers it makes it a lot easier for her to keep organized. If you do not keep a lot of nick nack's in the the bedroom that is also a lot easier for a child that has survived a brain injury.
SOME STRATEGIES FOR A CHILD THAT SURVIVED A TBI
1. When the child is in the hospital apply for Social Security Disability because I am sure that he or she will qualify with all of the medical records that you will have obtained.
2. Immediately apply for DDD this will give you a lot of extra help in the house like respite services. If you wait until your child is older it is harder to get it is a lot easier to become approved for this service when the child is younger.
3. Get you child involved in Early Intervention this is a great service that will help with all different types of therapies and a lot of times they will come to your home for the therapies.
4. Get the child involved in activities they need to make as many friends as possible because as they get older for some reason people with brain injuries have a hard time keeping friends. This is a proven fact, why we don't know but it just happens so the more friends that you can get them when they are younger the better.
5. Keep things organized at your home because disorganization is going to be very confusing to the person with the brain injury. He or she will not remember where things belong if you are constantly putting them in different places.
6. Try to avoid "Meltdowns" but if you have them (which you will this is for sure) just try to remain calm because they will pass. Just do not give the child what he or she wants because this is not the right thing to do you still have to be a parent. There are times when my daughter will start crying like she is 2 years old because she wants a friend to stay the night and I just will not give in. Trust me it can last an hour or two also.
7. If you ever need any help you can feel free to email me at anytime at steph_meza@msn.com for any questions like I said I have been dealing with this for 12 years and I am sure that I could help with something.
I hope that these things help you with your child that has a Traumatic Brain Injury. TBI can be very hard to deal with sometimes and I am sure that it is even harder for the child that has survived the injury because they have been left disabled without friends and the only person that is left in their lives is their Mom & Dad so whatever you do please stick by them and be as strong as possible. Become as knowledgeable as possible about TBI that is your ticket to success with this disability because there are not 2 injuries that are identical.
Thank you for stopping by to read.

Hello from Kingman, AZ
Hello Everyone in the World! I am brand new to Blogger.com and I would like to introduce myself to everyone and hopefully meet some great new friends quickly. My name is Steph and I am from beautiful sunny Kingman, AZ. Where it has been in the 80s all week this week. I know that a lot of people in the Eastern and Northern parts of the United States have really been hit hard with snow and heavy rain and I am really feeling bad for you all because I have had 2 back surgeries and I can relate to hurting with back pain in that type of weather. When it gets cold here in Arizona it literally gets so cold it seems like it hurts your bones. I think it has to do with it being so dry here in Arizona. A little bit more about myself is... I am a full time college student at the University of Phoenix Online. I just love going to college online. For anyone that has never taken college classes online and they have a problem concentrating this is the perfect chance for this person to get good grades once again in their life time. Ever since I have transferred to the University of Phoenix Online from Mohave Community College my Grade Point Average has went from 2.23 to 3.67. That is a great improvement. I am now able to apply for scholarships that I was never able to even think about before I started college online. Although, there are drawbacks to going to college online like you are not going to get the one-on-one with the instructor like you would at the other colleges. But, how I see it is you are not going to be getting any one-on-one anyway because of the fact that college's are really crowded nowadays. I think that it is something to think about. So, if anyone is seriously thinking about college and they are wanting to go to an online accredited college. Think about the University of Phoenix. You are more than welcome to email me at anytime so that I can give you information about my adviser and I know that she will help you with the process it is really easy. And the people that think that they don't qualify for financial aid usually do qualify. You have to make a lot of money each year in order to get absolutely nothing for financial aid. So, think about it and it is only 1 class at a time, every 5 weeks. Let me know what you think. Also, read my profile and if you ever have any questions about Traumatic Brain Injury please let me know. I have been dealing with this for many years (12 to be exact) I will have my next blog about TBI so that everyone can know what it is like to live with someone that has a TBI. Everyone have a fantastic day and please leave a comment. Steph
